What Pantograph does

For developers reporting a bug, support teams, teachers and anyone who shows how something works.

Records a tab in one click, or a window or your whole screen through Chrome’s own picker, up to 1080p at 30 frames per second.
Adds your voice, the tab’s or the system’s sound, and your camera in a round bubble drawn into the video, or records the camera alone.
Shows REC on the toolbar badge for as long as anything is recorded, with pause and resume, and the shortcuts Alt+Shift+R and Alt+Shift+P.
Saves to disk every second while you record: if Chrome or your computer stops, it offers to recover what was written.
Trims the start and end without re-encoding, and downloads a WebM file that shows its length and seeks in any player. MP4 is a beta where Chrome can record it.

What stays on your device

Recordings are stored in Pantograph’s private storage on your device and are never uploaded.
Your microphone and camera are used only while you record, and while you test them.
Pantograph never reads the address, title or page data of the tab it records: it receives only its picture and sound, while you record.
Recordings are kept in this browser only. Uninstalling Pantograph deletes them: download the ones you want to keep.
Recording other people? Tell them before you start and get their consent where the law requires it. In a video call, the others cannot see the REC badge.
With Pro, license checks send your license key and a random installation id, never recordings, addresses or titles. Pro keeps working offline for up to 30 days after the last check.

Permissions

What Pantograph asks Chrome for, and why.

At install: None. Nothing to accept at install.
storage: Saves your settings, the list of your recordings (date, length, size and format, never addresses or titles) and your license status on this device.
offscreen: Runs the recorder in a hidden extension page, so a recording continues when the popup closes.
unlimitedStorage: Keeps long recordings from failing on space limits, or from being deleted by Chrome when the disk is low.
tabCapture, optional: Asked the first time you record a tab in one click. Chrome words it “Read and change all your data on all websites”; you can decline and pick the tab in Chrome’s window instead.
Microphone and camera: Chrome asks once, from Pantograph’s setup page. They are used only while you record or test them.
